EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and VISA, a global standard for inter-operation of integrated circuit cards (IC cards or “chip cards”).

Chip cards contain a microprocessor, a type of small computer that offers additional security features and other capabilities not possible with traditional magnetic stripe cards. When the card is used, the chip connects to a reader. This enables the chip to exchange data with the terminal.
